Garlic has been known since ancient times for its taste as well as its beneficial properties. The ancient Greeks considered it aphrodisiac, while we learn from various sources that Homer ate it raw with bread. The Egyptian pharaohs gave garlic to the slaves who built the pyramids to increase their strength and endurance.
Garlic contains allicin which is responsible for the characteristic taste of fresh garlic. It is an antimicrobial agent and in combination with vitamin C its action is enhanced. Garlic contains vitamin A and selenium. It also contains calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, vitamin B1, B2 and B3.
Garlic detoxifies the body and protects it from infections by strengthening the function of the immune system. It lowers blood pressure and improves circulation. It may even prevent ulcers by inhibiting the growth of Helicobacter pylori.
