Basil (Okimon to basilikon), is an aromatic annual, herbaceous plant of the Heilanthus family. It originates from India and Iran but today it is cultivated in many regions of the world. In Greece it is one of the most common house plants. Its leaves are used dried as a spice and decoction. They contain essential oil, the main components of which are linalool and methylchavicol, which is used in perfumery. Basil is used as an herb as it is believed to be a good diuretic, relieves stomach ache and headache, while in ancient times mashed basil leaves were used as a poultice after insect, scorpion or even snake bites. Basil extract is beneficial in cases of stomatitis and cold sores. It is also recommended for migraines, headaches, simple nausea and nausea of ​​pregnancy. Basil essential oil is extracted from the whole plant, is almost transparent and has a smell that is sweet and spicy. It affects almost all systems of our body. It stimulates the nervous system, fights anxiety, mental fatigue and helps concentration. In addition, it relieves cough and cold. As basil has antiseptic properties, soaking the leaves in water for a long time prevents the water from becoming moldy. That is why basil is used by the Church to sanctify water. In cooking, basil can be used fresh or dried, and its aroma is somewhat similar to that of aniseed. Flavors various roasts, salads, boiled, stewed, soups, etc. while it goes well with sauces based on fresh tomatoes.
